A Sense of Time

Use the Telling Time Teaching Clock to help young children develop a sense of time. Talk about typical daily activities, such as getting up in the morning, eating lunch, and so on. With the speaker turned off, move the clock hands to show what the clock looks like for each activity and read the time for your child. For example, you might say, “The clock shows seven o’clock. That’s what time we get up in the morning. What do we do after that?”

Show Me the Time

Help your child practice time-telling skills with this simple game. Set the clock to “Tell Time” mode. Then, name a time, such as “six-thirty.” Invite your child to move the clock hands to match the time you named. The clock will let you know if the answer is correct! Take turns naming the time and showing it on the clock. When your child is ready, try writing the time to be shown instead of naming it, such as “6:30.”

Beat the Clock

As children’s time-telling skills improve, they may enjoy trying to “Beat the Clock.” Set the clock to “Tell Time” mode. Then, move the hands to a time your child is familiar with (for example, time on the hour for beginners, or quarter-hours for more experienced clock watchers). Challenge your child to name the time before the clock announces it.

Elapsed Time

Older children can use Telling Time Teaching Clock to boost their understanding of elapsed time. With the clock in “Tell Time” mode, set the hands to a time, such as 2:15. After the clock announces the time, prompt your child to move the hands to a new time, such as “thirty minutes after two-fifteen.” Tip: Point out that each number on the clock represents five minutes. Help your child count to thirty by fives as he or she moves the minute hand past each number on the clock.
